When to use this method
A local project works well when one person needs to read, retrieve, compare and cite a defined set of PDFs without automatic cloud sync. Other workflows are a better fit for shared editing, formal screening, protocol reporting or database-wide discovery.
Before you start
Write the research question, decide whether the work is an informal review or a formal systematic review and list any team or reporting requirements. Discovery finds papers, screening decides which papers qualify and evidence review reads and compares the included sources. One tool does not have to cover all three stages.

Understand the network boundary
Reading, notes, exact search and installed OCR run locally. DOI lookup, title-based metadata lookup and title translation use online services, so leave them unused when the query itself is sensitive.

Reopen the source page and check OCR, metadata, semantic matches and citation drafts before writing.
