Remove Photo Metadata Before Sharing on Windows

Create a separate photo copy, check the metadata result and review the image before sharing it.

Short answer

In File Explorer, right-click a supported photo, choose Clean Metadata, then Create clean copy. Check File details and open the output before sharing. Metadata cleaning does not hide faces, addresses or other details visible in the picture.

Before you start

  • Clean Metadata with an active license on Windows 11 24H2 or later, x64.
  • A disposable test photo on a local NTFS drive and enough free space.
  • An admitted image type: JPEG, PNG, WebP, GIF, BMP, AVIF, HEIC or HEIF. Some encodings and features are not supported.

Start here

  1. Start with one photo

    Put a sample photo in a local folder. Close any editor that is changing it. Keep an independent backup of important originals.

  2. Create a separate result

    Select the photo in File Explorer, right-click, open Clean Metadata and choose Create clean copy. This is an Explorer action, not an Add files button inside the app.

  3. Read the outcome

    Wait for completion and open File details. Check the removed-field count and any Retained or Preserved for file compatibility explanation. A supported extension does not guarantee that this particular file can be cleaned safely.

  4. Open the output

    For an individually selected photo that needed cleaning, look beside the original for a name ending in - clean, or - processed when required personal fields were retained. A number avoids an existing name. Use the reported result to identify the actual output.

  5. Share only after checking

    Open the result in an image viewer and check orientation, colors and the visible picture. Review the metadata fields you care about separately. Choose that inspected output when sharing, not the original.

Check your result

  • The original still exists and the output opens correctly.
  • File details does not leave an unexplained retained field relevant to your privacy needs.
  • Faces, house numbers, screens and other visible identifying details received a separate review.

Why there may be no new file

If no removable metadata is found, the current operation can finish without creating a copy. Read the result instead of assuming every selected photo produces an output.

If the source folder cannot accept the clean copy, the app can ask you to choose another folder. Use a writable local folder with enough free space.

Metadata cleaning is not anonymization

The app removes or neutralizes supported metadata while preserving the image content. It does not promise that every possible identifier is removed, securely erase the original or redact anything visible.

For an unsupported profile or feature, preserve the original. If appropriate, export a separate standard-format copy from its original app, check its appearance, then retry. Renaming an extension does not convert the image.
