Open the result in another reader. Check visible content and any hidden data that falls outside the app's metadata report separately.
What PDF metadata is
Metadata is information stored about a document rather than the words and pictures shown on its pages. It can describe who created the file, what it is called or which software wrote it. A reader often shows these values under Document Properties.
What this cleanup reviews
- Title, author and subject
- Keywords
- Creator and producer
- Custom details reported by the tool
That list is the cleanup scope. It is not a promise to remove comments, attachments, layers, old revisions or every private data type.

Inspect first
Open the source and write down the properties you expect to remove.
Review the app report
Add the PDF in Protect & Clean and read the listed fields before choosing cleanup.
Create a new file
Choose a separate name and destination, then run the metadata cleanup.
Reopen elsewhere
Use another PDF reader to inspect Document Properties and the visible pages.
Verify the privacy result
- The supported fields selected for cleanup no longer appear.
- The PDF still opens and every required page is present.
- Visible names, images, annotations and attachments received a separate review.
- The cleaned copy, not the original, is the file prepared for sharing.
What metadata removal does not do
It does not redact visible content, erase every hidden object or provide forensic sanitization. If a secret appears on a page, use a verified redaction workflow. If broader hidden-data removal is required, use a tool whose documented scope covers those exact data types.
