Short answer
Use Windows Storage for a built-in category view and Windows cleanup suggestions. Choose a dedicated analyzer when you need a file or folder inventory, a treemap, advanced filters, reports or access-limit details. No analyzer can decide that an unfamiliar large file is safe to delete.
What a disk space analyzer does
A disk analyzer inventories storage and helps you find large files or folders. A folder tree shows the hierarchy as a list. A treemap draws files as rectangles sized by space used. These are different ways to inspect the same problem, not proof that any item is disposable.
Before you compare
Write down the drive or folder you need to inspect, whether you need a treemap, whether network or removable storage matters and whether cleanup must produce a record. Keep a backup of irreplaceable files. If a tool requests administrator rights, understand that broader access can reveal more system data but does not make deletion safer.

Make the choice in five steps
1. Try the built-in category view
Open Settings, System, then Storage. If the category breakdown and Cleanup recommendations answer the question, stop there.
2. Decide whether a picture or list helps more
Choose a treemap when visual area is the main clue. Choose a size-ranked tree or detailed columns when you need names, paths, dates and ownership context.
3. Match the storage scope
Check whether the tool supports the exact drive, folder, network share, cloud path or removable device involved. Do not assume one scan method covers every file system and access level.
4. Separate analysis from deletion
Prefer an uninstaller, the owning application's cleanup command, a verified move or the Recycle Bin for reviewed personal files. Permanent deletion should be a separate, deliberate choice.
5. Rescan and confirm
Measure free space before and after the action, then check that the owning app and important files still work.
Problems and limits
- A treemap shows size, not business value or deletion safety.
- MFT scanning reads supported, accessible NTFS metadata. Damaged, protected or disconnected content remains outside that inventory.
- Scan times and resource use were not benchmarked for this guide.
- License, commercial-use and supported-platform terms can change; check the linked official page.
