Short answer
Start with Windows Storage when broad categories answer your question. Choose a dedicated analyzer when you need exact file and folder details, a treemap, filters, reports, or warnings about items that could not be fully read. An analyzer finds items to review. It cannot decide that an unfamiliar file is safe to delete.
What a disk space analyzer does
A disk analyzer inventories storage and helps you find large files or folders. A folder tree presents the hierarchy as a list; a treemap draws files as rectangles sized by space used.
On an NTFS drive, the Master File Table (MFT) is the file system's index of files and folders. A compatible analyzer can read this index for an inventory, but it still cannot include content it cannot access.
Before you compare
Write down the drive or folder you need to inspect, whether you need a treemap, whether network or removable storage matters and whether cleanup must produce a record. Keep a backup of irreplaceable files. If a tool requests administrator rights, understand that broader access can reveal more system data but does not make deletion safer.

Make the choice in five steps
1. Try the built-in category view
Open Settings, System, then Storage. You should see categories that explain where the space went. If they answer the question, stop there.
2. Choose a picture or a list
Choose a treemap when a picture of relative size helps. Choose a size-ranked list when you need names, paths, dates, and ownership clues.
3. Check the storage scope
Confirm that the tool supports the exact drive, folder, network share, cloud path, or removable device. You should see that scope in the tool's documented choices before installing it.
4. Find the owner before removal
Use the analyzer to find a candidate. Then use its owning app, an uninstaller, a verified move, or the Recycle Bin. Permanent deletion should remain a separate choice.
5. Rescan and confirm
Record free space, make one change, and scan again. You should see the expected space difference and the owning app should still work.

- A treemap shows size, not business value or deletion safety.
- Master File Table scanning reads supported, accessible NTFS metadata. Damaged, protected or disconnected content remains outside that inventory.
