Short answer
Start by finding the files and folders that use the most space. Check what each item belongs to before you move, uninstall, or delete it.
Free Space Now removes only the listed cache and temporary-file locations. It does not clean personal folders such as Documents, Pictures, or Downloads.
When to use this method
One-click cleaners prioritize convenience; this workflow keeps candidates, exclusions and irreversible choices visible to the user.
Before you start
Save open work, record the drive's current free space and back up files you cannot replace. Free Space Now cleans only reviewed, allowlisted locations and produces a receipt. Permanent Delete is a separate manual action for a selected item and cannot be undone through the Recycle Bin.
How we checked this guide How cleanup allowlists and receipt behavior were verified.
- What we reviewed
- Reviewed ranking, open-location, Recycle Bin, explicit permanent deletion and the Free Space Now cleanup allowlist in Osenpa Disk Analyzer.
- What we confirmed
- Free Space Now is constrained to reviewed temporary and cache targets and excludes personal libraries. Manual permanent deletion is a separate, explicit and irreversible action that stops when a safety check fails.
- Important limit
- An old archive in Downloads will not be removed by the cleanup allowlist. Move or recycle it deliberately after confirming ownership instead of expecting automatic cleanup.
Reclaim space with evidence
Start with high-impact candidates
Focus on a small number of very large files or folders rather than deleting thousands of tiny items with unclear benefit. The Large and old view uses at least 1 GiB and at least 90 days as review thresholds, not deletion rules.
Identify ownership and purpose
Open the folder, check dates and use the creating application’s cleanup or uninstall path where one exists.
Use the built-in cleanup list
Free Space Now targets reviewed temporary and cache locations. Read its selection instead of assuming it searches personal libraries or every application cache.
Verify the result
Confirm that needed applications and files still work. Use Recycle Bin or a backup for manual candidates before choosing explicit permanent deletion.
Cleanup risks
- Assuming a cleanup allowlist covers every safe-to-remove file
- Removing application data outside its own cleanup path
- Permanently deleting the only copy of an archive
Checkpoint: Cleanup checks
- Record free space before cleanup.
- Review Free Space Now categories before running them.
- Use the owning application's cleanup route when available.
- Rescan and confirm the expected gain before making any manual deletion permanent.
